Sleep Inducing Habits for Quality Shut Eye

Sleep, as relaxing as it should be, sometimes feels a lot like work. It’s hard to fall asleep; it’s hard to stay asleep; and we never seem to have enough. Getting enough quality sleep is essential for a productive and healthy lifestyle. Unfortunately, it seems as though the older we get, the harder it is to come by. If you find yourself struggling to get enough quality shut eye, you’re not alone. Instead of suffering with the fatigue and consequences, try these tips for getting the sleep you’ve been dreaming about.

Make a ritual

Going to bed should be something that is more of a process than an afterthought. As much as is possible, make a routine for winding down and getting prepared for sleep. Perhaps your routine includes a little television, a hot shower, some comfortable pajamas, a few minutes reading, or a glass of wine. It doesn’t matter what your routine includes as long as it works for you. Once you find a routine you like, stick with it. Soon, your body will start to signal that it is time for sleep as soon as you begin your routine. You’ll fall asleep faster and will often get better quality sleep as well.

Make your room colder

Remember when you were young and in school? There was just something about those freezing cold classrooms that made everyone sleepy. Being too hot can keep you from falling asleep and staying asleep. Before you go to bed, turn down your thermostat just a little. Your body always needs to cool down before sleep, so you will be giving it a head start. It also allows you to snuggle in the covers which works for a lot of people as well.

Get out in the sun

Your body, like it or not, works on an internal clock. It needs to see the daylight in order to awaken fully, and the sooner it does this, the better off you’ll be later in the day. Getting outside early will tell your body that it’s time to be awake. This starts your internal clock...meaning that a set number of hours later, it’ll begin to get tired. Doing this everyday as a habit will get your internal clock set more permanently allowing for better sleep at the end of the day.

Getting the proper amount of sleep can make a huge difference in your life and health. It allows for repair and rejuvenation of the body, and it also keeps your outlook more positive and happier. Use these tips to get a little shut eye and to build a healthy and productive lifestyle.
