You have probably been told to stay away from carbs like the plague, especially near bedtime. Eating a good complex carb before bed, however, can actually help you sleep. You’re told to stay away from carbs because of the calories, but for sleeping, carbs can promote sleepiness. To make sure you get the good kind and stay away from the bad carbs, stick to foods like oats, quinoa, and barley.

Foods With Potassium

Potassium serves as a muscle relaxant in the body. This means that ingesting your fair share can promote the body to wind down and relax. Foods with healthy amounts of potassium? Bananas, sweet potatoes, avocados, squash, and dark leafy greens all contain large enough amounts of potassium to help relax your body and induce sleep.

Foods to Avoid

Of course, along with these foods that should be added, it’s important to note what you should stay away from. Foods with caffeine or other stimulants are the number one to avoid. Foods like coffee, chocolate, and sodas all contain enough contain to keep you up. It’s also important to avoid alcohol. Even though alcohol can actually help you fall asleep, it won’t help you stay asleep. It will actually prevent you from reaching the deep sleep cycle which is essential for getting quality sleep.

Sleep is important for your mental and physical well being. In order to beat insomnia and get some rest, try adding any or all of these sleep inducing foods to the mix. Pretty soon, you’ll find that hitting the pillow no longer brings nights of counting sheep, and instead means you’ll be getting the rest you so desperately need.
