With Valentine’s Day quickly approaching, you are probably seeing hearts at every turn. Hearts full of chocolate, hearts with sweet sayings, and hearts attached to gigantic teddy bears. While all of these hearts are a great way to show someone you love them, protecting your own heart is a great way to show a little love to yourself.

Heart health is vital for keeping yourself healthy and strong, now and in the future. To keep your ticker ticking and your body as healthy as possible, check out these tips for optimal heart health.

Get in Some Cardio

Cardio is important for your many parts of your body. Your lungs and muscles obviously benefit from a little cardio, but your heart needs this type of exercise as well. Cardio keeps your blood flowing and brings oxygen into your body. It also builds endurance, and after making cardio a habit, your resting pulse is likely to remain fairly low. All of these combined mean that you are working towards a much healthier heart. The blood can move more freely, and the heart has to do less work to move the same amount of blood. Overall, your heart gets stronger, but your body puts less demand on it. Cardio improves the heart function, meaning that it may be able to last longer.

Eat Antioxidants

Antioxidants are found in many foods. Their job is cell repair and production. When you fuel your body with antioxidants, your body is better able to protect the cells that you have and repair those that need it. They help you to fight off infection and keep your overall health in much better condition. If you want to add antioxidants to your diet, you have lots of choices. Leafy greens, berries (especially blueberries), and beans all contain large amounts of this beneficial compound. If you need something sweet, grab yourself a chunk of dark chocolate for a punch of antioxidants and a satisfying dessert.

Rest and Relax

You already know that stress is bad for the heart. Yet, for some reason, we still don’t make enough time to rest and relax. Making the time for a little R&R may keep your heart healthier. Relaxation may come in different forms for everyone, so find what works for you. A hot shower, a massage, a hobby, or a walk in nature are all common ways that people use to relax. For adequate rest, try to stick to a bedtime routine and get as much quality shut eye as you can.
