Common Causes of Neck Pain, and What You Can Do to Ease It

Neck pain is common for adults. Whether we sleep in an awkward position, or have an injury, most people will experience neck pain at one point or another in their lives. The most frustrating kind of neck pain is the kind with no apparent cause. Of course, any kind of pain that gets in the way of life is irritating. If you suffer from neck pain, check out these common causes and what you can do about them to prevent such pain.

Incorrect Sleeping Position

This is one of the most common causes of neck pain. Sleeping with your head too high or too low, puts the spine in an awkward angle. Over the course of a night (or sometimes less), this builds up and causes pressure and pain in the neck area. This sort of pain usually works itself out, but in the meantime, it can truly get in the way of everyday tasks.

Text Neck

Who knew that this was a real thing? Text neck is what happens when your neck stays at a bent over angle for too long. Imagine your posture when texting. Bent, slumped, and far from good or even decent posture. This causes the neck to be strained, and ultimately causes pain and discomfort. Multiply that with the amount of time we spend on an electronic device and you have a true recipe for neck pain disaster.

Injury

Most of these kinds of pains cannot be avoided. An accident, for example, cannot be predicted. Some injuries, however, can be prevented through proper technique and care. For example, to avoid injuring your neck while lifting, follow proper lifting techniques. To avoid exercise injury, follow good form and ask for help when you need it. Being careful and prepared is about the only way to avoid injury related pain, but taking proper precautions will be well worth it.

What Can I Do?

There are  a few things you can do to prevent or treat neck pain. For sleeping problems, buy the right pillow. You will be shocked at what a difference a good pillow can make. For text neck, get off of the phone. Ok, that’s probably not going to happen, but if you can limit your time even a little bit, you may prevent this type of neck pain. Another great option is to get regular chiropractic care. This allows a chiropractor to align the spine properly and keep tension and pain away from the spine and neck area. Those that get regular chiropractic care report positive healthy changes to their body including pain management and prevention.
