How to Kick Your Cravings to the Curb

I’m not one to experience food cravings on a regular basis, but when they strike, they strike hard. I get so ferociously focused on my treat of choice, I imagine I feel like a hormonal pregnant woman needing her peanut butter and pickles at all costs.

Oddly enough, when these cravings hit me, it is usually right when I wake up either from a night when I didn’t get my required nine hours, or from an afternoon nap. I used to give in, throwing away my whole nutritional belief system and downing half a bag of salt and vinegar chips before 7 a.m. without giving it a thought, choosing that leftover birthday cake as a wise lunch choice or attempting to make a Flaming Hot Cheeto quesadilla (it didn’t work out, in case you were wondering.)

Needless to say, this way of living had to come to an end. The tips below are some ways that help me curb my cravings, make healthier food choices during those times of need, and become one step closer to being a functioning adult.

Chewing Helps

I don’t mean chewing food either. Gum may be your best friend when you are craving a junky snack. It’s not the sweet flavor that sets off the cravings, especially if you are more of a salt person like me. The repetitive action of chewing sort of tricks the brain into thinking that it is eating something. If your brain starts thinking that it is eating, then it will eventually begin to think that it is full. This will buy you some time until you start thinking clearly and realize that eating your coworkers lunch isn’t a wise choice.

Brush Like You Never Brushed Before

Brush away the cravings by coating your mouth in toothpaste. The stark taste of the toothpaste makes the idea of other food less appealing. Just think about it, after you brush your teeth in the morning you don’t necessarily want to dive into a plate of spaghetti. Not only that, but if you use a mint flavor, this could literally make you less hungry. Mint is a natural appetite suppressant, so not only will you be keeping up on your tooth and gum health, but you will be making a healthier choice.

Indulge In Another Craving

As long as it isn’t something harmful to your health, yourself or anyone else, indulging in something else that you crave during your food crisis is a great way to distract yourself. Basically your body wants a reward, and if you want to stray away from that bacon cheeseburger, reward it with something less fattening, like a chat with the cute girl in the cubical across from you. The flirting will feed your body’s need for stress release, as well as keep your waist trim.
