Inactive vs. Obese: Which is Worse?

As we get older, we find that it is not only harder to lose weight, but that it is increasingly harder to find the time to be active on a consistent basis. From work and school, to keeping up with our families, it can be hard to eat right and work out. With that said, it is vital that we stay active for the longevity of our live.

There have been recent studies that have shown, that deaths in those of a normal weight, resulting from inactivity tend to be at a higher rate than those in people who are deemed overweight or obese. Although some may associate being unhealthy with those that are overweight and obese, but this is not necessarily true.

True or false: Those that are at a normal weight don't have to exercise?

False. A study that was performed in Europe has shown that people who are overweight but exercise, are at a lower risk of death in comparison to those that are at a normal weight but inactive.

It does not matter if you are of normal weight, overweight or obese, staying active on a daily basis is important for everyone across the board.

What kind of exercise is needed to be considered "active"?

Although most would think intense cardio would be the answer to staying active, this is not true.

For those that have been inactive for years, or maybe used to be active and have fallen off the workout track, starting off with daily walks is a great start to being active. Walking is not only an easy way to burn calories and stay active, but it can be done anywhere. From lunch breaks, to taking your dog on a walk, there are plenty of opportunities to take a moment to get active on a weekly basis.

What are other benefits of staying active?

Staying active helps with heart health. The less weight you have on your own frame, the less your vital organs have to work to make sure that you are getting adequate oxygen and blood pumped throughout your body. You also lower your risk of illness and health issues related to being overweight. These health issues include: high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol and heart disease.

Conclusion of the study

It is important to remind people that it doesn’t matter the size of someone, weight does not factor how healthy or unhealthy you are. It is possible to be unhealthy at a smaller weight, based solely on the fact that they are inactive. It is vital for people across the weight spectrum to take their lifestyle seriously and making more activities available in their daily lives.  Remember to make more time on your work lunch breaks and on the weekends to go on a walk or bike ride, anything helps to keep you active.
