Are You Up to Speed on Milk ?

As of today, we have a lot more information about milk, and it’s different health benefits and risks. We also have a lot of different types of milk as well. It is no longer the day of the dairy cow, especially now that research has surfaced questioning the purity of dairy milk. A lot of people have sought out alternatives to regular dairy milk such as coconut milk, almond milk, lactaid, and soy milk among many others. Although some of these options tend to be the obvious “healthier” choice, there are some nutritional set backs to drinking those types of milk.

Dairy milk comes in a variety of choices; from whole milk to skim milk, 1% and 2%. Dairy milk runs high in necessary fats, proteins, and calcium. Lactaid, or lactose-free milk, falls under the category of dairy milk, as it is simply milk from dairy cows that has the lactose chemical removed. This helps individuals with lactose allergies receive the beneficial vitamins dairy milk provides. On the other hand, dairy milk does have it’s cons. It can be high in saturated fats, and sugars. Lately there has been a lot of controversy about synthetic growth hormones in dairy cows that transfer into our milk.

Coconut Milk has wonderful benefits to help with energy expenditure. The fats in coconut milk are easily digested, and is burned quite quickly rather than staying as fat on the body. Coconut milk is actually a powerful brain “food” as well, helping with memory retention. Some negative factors of drinking coconut milk is that it can cause upset stomachs due to certain carbohydrates and sugars the drink contains.

Almond Milk has become an extremely popular alternative to dairy milk. It actually does not contain any cholesterol or saturated fats. It’s extremely rich in vitamins A and D, and is a wonderful organic choice. Though almond milk is a great alternative, especially to lactose intolerant individuals, it lacks a lot of calcium and protein.

Soy Milk is generally the number one choice for lactose intolerant individuals because it still contains nutrients that are high in protein, vitamins A and D, and potassium. Soy is also a lower calorie option, and contains no cholesterol. Unfortunately, it might be impossible for people to make soy a lifestyle choice because too much soy has proven to be actually lower fertility in men and women.

As human beings we love milk. Milk has been a staple part of our diet since we came out of the womb. It’s important to know your options and all of the information about this liquid gold!
