Healthy Fruits You Can Have All Year

By Sara Butler

It’s very important to get your daily recommended intake of fruits and vegetables every single day. According to the United States Department of Agriculture, how much fruit you need in a day depends on your age and sex, but in general, everyone needs somewhere between one and two cups per day. It can be a challenge to find fresh fruit all year long, but here are some fruits that never go out of season.

Bananas

You’d be bananas not to reach for a banana – no matter the time of the year. The United States gets imported bananas from Central America all year long. Bananas are one of the best foods you can eat to fuel your workout. Plus, they’re really convenient to throw in your bag and go. They even fit right into your hand! They are full of potassium, fiber and Vitamin B6. So, just say yes to bananas!

Avocados

Avocados are technically a fruit because of their pits, so you can count this in the fruit category! Thanks to California, everyone in the United States can enjoy avocados all year long. They have over 20 different vitamins and minerals to do your body good, such as unsaturated fatty acids, fiber, potassium, and Vitamin C. Avocados are no-frill fruits since you can just scoop and eat, or drizzle with a little olive oil if you really want.

Frozen Raspberries

Fruit doesn’t have to be fresh to be good for you. In fact, fruit gets flash-frozen at its peak of freshness, which means it’s got just as many vitamins and minerals to offer as fresh fruit. Raspberries have even more antioxidants when frozen than the fresh version, plus they help to reduce inflammation, lower your risk of obesity and reduce your chances of getting heart disease and diabetes. Add them to your morning smoothie for a nutritious treat. Don't shy away from frozen fruit.

Apples

Thanks to the miracle of cold storage, apples are available all year even though they’re known as a fall staple. Apples are loaded with fiber and low in calories, and they lower your risk of developing certain kinds of cancers such as ovarian, kidney, colon, and breast. An apple a day may just keep the doctor away!

Oranges

Oranges are really, really good for you thanks to all their Vitamin C. And they’re available to you all year long too. They help to support a healthy immune system and are good for the health of your body tissues. Just don’t be seduced by the juice – it doesn’t have any of the fiber! You’re better off going with the whole fruit instead.
