Facing Osteoarthritis? Your Chiropractor Can Help

Joint degeneration, known as osteoarthritis, may be accepted as inevitable aging by some. But the American Chiropractor’s Association says it is not that simple. Recent research says seniors do not have to just endure osteoarthritic pain.

In OA, the slippery tissue on the ends of the bones where joints meet, is called cartilage. As it breaks down and wears away, bones no longer glide over each other. Pain, swelling and stiffness can take over.

ACA says family history, overweight, lack of exercise and earlier joint injuries are likely causes. Steady or intermittent joint pain, stiffness after sitting or sleeping, joint swelling or tenderness and joint crunching are all signs.

But getting an early diagnosis, with exercise included, can change the situation, helping to maintain mobility, activity and mood.

I have seen OA hit some people as they moved into their sixties and seventies, quickly putting the brakes on life. Everything slowed down, their pace, their mood, their world.

But I have also known men and women who faced OA head on, got an early diagnosis and kept right on going with exercise, favorite activities and regular treatment.

How Your Chiropractor Can Help

If OA shows up for you or someone in your family your chiropractor can help. In the initial visit to the chiropractor there is a spinal adjustment to evaluate spinal health, a review of medical history and discussion about daily activities. The chiropractor will be able to detect early degeneration in the spine, hips, and knees. Their goal is to seek to relieve pain and maintain activity without medication or surgery.

They are trained to improve function through natural therapy and they can help the patient find safe exercises, low impact, non- weight-bearing ones like walking and stationary training. Strengthening exercises of muscle groups that support the joints can also be used. Losing weight, exercising carefully to avoid stressing knee or ankle joints, and water aerobics may all become part of the plan. The patient will also learn how to read body signals, knowing when to stop, slow down or rest.

As the chiropractor visits continue, they can provide an ongoing monitoring to shape the best approach to OA.

Instead of sitting back and just accepting OA, the approach is one that asks what do we do next to keep the patient moving, in touch with family and satisfied with life. That’s a huge difference.
