Avoid Addiction from Dependence on Pain Pills

By Debra Rodzinak

With the “quick fix” mentality in society today, it seems easier to get a prescription for painkilling drugs rather than treating the cause of pain.  According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), chronic pain affects about 100 million people per year in America.  One in every 3 people in our population suffers with some form of chronic pain.  This pain costs taxpayers around $600 billion annually in medical expenses and missed workdays.

Somewhere between 5-8 million people in the United States use opioids for pain management in the long term.  In the past 20 years, opioid prescriptions have jumped up to three times of what they were in 1991.  This increase has led to overdoses and addiction to painkillers.

The Silent Epidemic

Evidence has also shown that many people who suffer from chronic pain do not receive the proper medical treatment for their pain.  This “silent epidemic” has led many to question the way people are treated for chronic pain.

The NIH held a workshop in September of 2014 to address the role that opioids play in the treatment of chronic pain.  Experts, speakers, and an informed, systematic review conducted by the Pacific Northwest Evidence-based Practice Center (EPC) brought forth evidence on the long-term effects, safety, harms, and effectiveness of particular strategies pertaining to opioid treatment.

Avoiding Addiction

The best way to avoid opioid addiction is to never take them in the first place.  One way to do this is to address the source of pain and then treat the cause of pain -- get it at the root.  Chiropractic is one way to address the direct source of pain and develop a treatment plan to eliminate pain without the use of drugs or surgery.
