Should You Get Chiropractic Adjustments Forever?
By Dr. Molly Casey
In my career as a chiropractor, I’ve heard one question hundreds of times and I’m sure I’ll hear it hundreds more: “Once I start getting adjusted, do I have to keep getting adjusted for the rest of my life?” My reply is always the same: “No, of course not, you need not do anything for the rest of your life.”
I then continue with a question: “Are you going to brush your teeth for the rest of your life? And your car, are you going to continue to put gas in the tank, change the oil and get tune-ups for the rest of your life?” While these questions may sound silly, it drives the point home quite quickly. Let me explain.
Your Body is a Machine
The human body, your body, is a machine. It is pieces and parts that move and work together. All of the workings and functions are directed by and through the central nervous system, your brain and spinal cord. Your nervous system is your communication system. The peripheral nervous system is the collection of nerves that carry messages to and from the brain and spinal cord to all other structures in the body (legs, fingertips, etc.).
If you desire your machine, your body, to work to the highest possible degree, the communication system must be able to run with as little interference as possible and perform the maintenance required. One of the primary ways in which interference to this system occurs is when the spine itself is not functioning optimally. When spinal joints are not moving through their full range of motion and are malpositioned, there is a negative effect on the ability of the nervous system to transmit messages between the brain and the rest of the body and vice versa. The end result, whether you feel it or not, is your body is not functioning optimally. Ultimately, “dis-ease” and disease result.
Chiropractic Adjustment
The chiropractic adjustment restores nervous system function through the correction of misaligned spinal vertebrae and increasing the spinal vertebrae joint range of motion. With this correction, the nervous system communication is improved. Your nervous system is the communication system between the brain and your body. To live your best and healthiest life, it is imperative that this system run with as little interference as possible. The more interference, the unhealthier the individual.
It’s a Choice
Chiropractic is simple. Machines and human bodies run better without interference. The chiropractic adjustment removes interference. One need not do anything for the entirety of their life. However, if you are looking for the best possible experience in this life, it makes the most sense to ensure your machine (your body) is functioning at the highest possible level with the least amount of interference. Getting adjusted is about acquiring the level of health and function you desire for your body and your experience in life.
So do you need to get adjusted for the rest of your life? No, absolutely not. However, I ask in return -- what level of experience do you want in this life? A half-baked, drowned-out, muted experience because of the interference in your main communication system? Or a life and experience that is functioning at the highest level with as little interference as possible?
