5 Ways to Have a More Appealing Chiropractic Visit

By Brandi Goodman

Seeing a chiropractor can feel overwhelming in the beginning. Most people aren't really sure of what to expect when they first visit. You can help your sessions be more appealing and worthwhile with a few tips in mind.

Drink Water Before and After You Go

It may be difficult for the chiropractor to work on your joints if they're extremely stiff. If you're someone who doesn't drink water often then at least be sure to get some in before you go for your visit. You should have a glass afterward as well so you can keep your joints as flexible as possible and really allow the adjustment to work for your body.

Wear Comfortable Clothing

You might not want to run straight to the chiropractor in your work clothes -- especially if you're coming from the office. A business suit isn't going to be comfortable to get your adjustment in. You should also avoid wearing bulky clothing, such as a sweatshirt, and may even want to skip the jeans. Activewear is one of the best options because it allows you to use your full range of motion and move around as the chiropractor instructs you. Avoid wearing necklaces or hanging earrings as well.

Tell the Truth

Your chiropractor may ask you for a medical history or inquire about your source of pain. Tell the truth. You might be embarrassed to admit that you sit slumped on your couch for hours each night, but telling the doctor this will help you get the care you need. They want to pinpoint the reason for the pain and detect where it starts so they can perform an adjustment that will help. They'll also offer you some helpful tips, such as stretches you can do or ways to sit straight, so you don't have to experience these aches again.

Don't Be Scared of the Sounds

It can be scary to hear what sounds like your joints cracking loudly. Popping and cracking noises are common to hear at the chiropractor. People often make the mistake of tensing up and feeling scared when they hear these things. Don't. Understand that these are normal and try to remain as calm as possible. Allowing your body to tense up can make the correct adjustment difficult to achieve.

Ask Questions

Don't leave the chiropractor with questions still on your mind. Make sure you ask anything you need so you are fully aware of the recommended treatment plan and how to make the most of the care you just received. If your doctor gives you a sheet of exercises, for example, and you're unsure on how to do one, you can ask for a demonstration so you understand the correct form.

Make your chiropractic visit more worth your while by keeping these things in mind. It will be more appealing if you feel comfortable and have an idea of what to expect.
