How to Challenge Your Mind for Better Brain Health

By Brandi Goodman

You may notice trouble with memory as you age. It becomes more difficult to remember things. You struggle with brain fog. It's all part of aging -- but the process can be delayed. Continue to challenge your mind and you can better your brain health.

Play a Game

Lots of games are beneficial for your health. They keep your mind strong. Games that really require you to think and use your brain power are best to do. Language games, such as Scrabble, work well. Memory games are also ideal. Puzzles and problem solving games are equally beneficial.

Take a Class

Learning something new is also a great way to keep your mind strong. Take a class so you can learn something different and keep your brain growing. Many local libraries and community centers offer class options for free or cheap. You can even take a class or two at a local college if you have the money. Something as simple as a cooking class can benefit your mind.

Start a New Hobby

Having a hobby gives you something to occupy your time while also keeping your brain healthy. Try something different that you can enjoy learning to do. Take up guitar. Start gardening. Learn to knit. Lots of hobbies are available and you don't even have to just pick one. Find a few things that interest you and give them all a try.

Join a Book Club

Reading is great for your brain health. It can reduce stress and help with your memory. You'll be more likely to remember difficult words as you age and keep your vocabulary strong. You can either choose to read books on your own or join a book club. A club like this allows you to get together with others who are reading the same thing and have a discussion. It's another way to strengthen your mind.

Write

It can be easy to forget the little moments in life that happened along the way. Start writing. You can keep a memoir of all you've accomplished in life and the things you've seen. You don't have to plan on being an author or making sales to write. Write it for yourself and for your family. Use it to keep your memories alive and strengthen your mind while also having something put together that can teach your family about who you were and how you lived after you're gone.

Keep your mind strong and your brain healthy by trying new things and keeping yourself challenged. Your memory will go quick as you age if you never do anything to prevent it. Spending just a little time each day working your mind can help tremendously.
