How to Create Routines That Work for You

By Genevieve Cunningham

People like routines. We don't always admit it, and we don't always use them. But overall, our bodies and minds like to know what's coming next. Sometimes routines happen by chance. We do the same things in the same order and it just works for us. But other times, we need to really sculpt our routines. We need to make certain things happen on purpose in order to truly gain the health benefits that come from these routines. But how do we do that? What's in a good routine? How do we know if it's working for us or not? If you need help creating routines that really work for your health and life, take a look at these tips for success.

You Have to Get to Know Your Needs

Before you can create a good routine, you have to know what your body and mind want. Do you need rest? Quiet? Stimulation? Energy? Once you determine your own needs, you can get specific about your routines. If you need to wake up slowly, you may want some peace and quiet in the morning. If you need energy, you may want to start with exercise. Figure out what you need first and then go from there.

You Have to Experiment

Don't be afraid to try something new in your routine. And don't be afraid when it doesn't work at all. You're going to have to experiment to get it right. Try something and see if it works. If not, try something else. Eventually, you'll find the right combination to set your body and mind at ease through the practice of each routine.

You Have to Listen

Your body and mind will tell you whether they like what's happening. All you have to do is listen. If you keep getting a headache in the morning, try getting more sleep. If you get anxious at bedtime, adjust your routine somehow. But listen to the way that you respond. As you get to know yourself, you can make changes that feel good to body and mind in the long run.

You Have to Compromise

You may not be able to have everything you want. If you really want to sleep in, but you have work early, you're going to have to compromise on your routine. If you're really a night owl, but you're on a strict morning school schedule, you're going to have to compromise on your bedtime routine. Be flexible. The more flexible, the less stress, and the easier it will be to find what you need.

Routines are important. They work, but you have to make them work. Use these tips to create routines that feel good in your life, and watch the benefits pop up like never before.
