Healthy Holiday Habits

By Donna Stark

Just because it's the holiday season and a time for celebrations, that doesn't mean you can forgo your healthy lifestyle. In fact, it probably means the exact opposite! This is the time of year when you should be especially vigilant with your overall health and wellness because there is nothing worse than starting a new year feeling like junk. But what should you focus on? Your diet? Your sleep? Your daily stress levels? The answers to your questions are a resounding yes ... yes to all of them! Take a look at the following reminders of what is most important.

Holiday Stress

It is very easy (and common!) for people to get stressed out during this time of year. The pressure to select the right gift, get all your work done, make time for everyone on the list, attend all performances, and cook the most amazing meals this side of heaven can definitely be overwhelming. It's no wonder why so many people are at their wits end. But that is exactly why it is so important to effectively manage your stress. Make sure you have a healthy outlet for the release of your emotions, plan ahead, practice some self-care, and get your sleep! Your body and well-being depend on it.

Holiday Eating

From the fancy meals to the decadent desserts to the sweet treats to the cup after cup after cup of hot chocolate, there is nothing quite like all the foods you get to eat during this month, is there? But if you want to stay on top of your health and weight, you need to pay attention to what you are consuming! Be sure to watch the sizes of your portions, eat the unhealthier items in moderation, share desserts with those you are with, and try to avoid drinking your calories. Remember, lots of fruit, vegetables, and water are key this month!

Holiday Fitness

With all the extra activities you have scheduled on your calendar, it may seem difficult to maintain your fitness, but don't give up without trying! Staying physically active during this month is actually a lot easier than you think. Head to the mall and walk from store to store instead of ordering your gifts online, wake up a little bit earlier to get your workout over with, or meet your friends on the trail instead of for lunch. There are plenty of ways to incorporate physical activity into your days if you look hard enough.

A Healthy Season Is Possible

The holiday season is a great time for you and your loved ones to have fun, so if you want to enjoy the flurry of activities and enter the new year feeling better than ever, try to apply the suggestions above to your daily routine. You certainly won't regret doing so!
