Now's the Time to Focus on Nutrition
By Donna Stark
There is no better time to start focusing on the nutrition you give your body than the spring. That's because National Nutrition Month is celebrated in March and stresses the importance of the type, quality, and quantity of food we consume on a daily basis. Why are those factors important? Because each one plays a vital role in our overall health and wellness. If you would like to improve your diet and aren't sure how to start, take a look at the following recommendations from your local chiropractors at The Joint Chiropractic.
FFSS? What is that? Well, it's food first, supplements second and there's a great reason why you should incorporate that habit into your daily routine. Supplements are notorious for providing inadequate amounts of nutrition. It is much healthier and better for your body to get those nutrients from natural sources instead.
When in doubt, eat the rainbow! In addition to making your meals insanely pretty and picture-worthy, deeply hued fruits and vegetables are a great source of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and anti-inflammatory properties. Try to add more color to your plates with every meal. There's no easier or tastier way to give your body exactly what it needs.
Shop the Perimeter
Shopping the perimeter of your grocery store is one of the best ways to improve the quality of food you buy and take home to your family. By selecting more organic fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and dairy products to throw in your cart, you can avoid a lot of the processed items that line the inner aisles of the store.
Drink More Water
The question isn't if you know how important water is, but if you are drinking the recommended amount of it each day. If not, you may need to make some immediate changes! Ditch the sodas, energy drinks, and endless cups of coffee and carry a refillable water bottle around with you instead. Here are some great suggestions on how to add more water to your diet.
- Start and end your days with a glass of water
- Infuse your water with citrus, mint leaves, cucumbers, and berries for added flavor
- Always choose water when eating out
- Increase your intake when outdoors
Celebrating National Nutrition Month
Pay more attention to your overall health and wellness this month by following the suggestions above and consuming more nutrient-dense foods. In addition to improving the way you feel every day, these foods will also help improve the quality of your life!
