Spine-Friendly Exercises for Summer
By Donna Stark
With summer right around the corner, you may want to start considering which exercises you are going to engage in. And while you are doing that, you may also want to make sure the exercises you choose are friendly to your spine, because you certainly don't want to start the summer dealing with back pain. Fortunately, there are plenty of options out there, but let's take a look at just a few of the most common ones below. These are perfect to do either on your own or with a group of friends.
Hiking
If you have the heart of an explorer and love everything that Mother Nature has to offer, hiking will easily become one of your most favorite summer activities. Hiking is an all-over body workout that supports optimal spinal health by getting you off the couch, helping you maintain a healthy weight, and improving the function of your joints and muscles. Before you head out to the trails though, make sure you have supportive shoes, plenty of water, and a plan. Check the weather for the day and choose a trail you know you can complete.
Swimming
You already know that swimming is one of the top summer pastimes, but did you know that it is one of the most spine-friendly exercises, too? Swimming isn't only good for cooling you down. It's also a low-impact exercise that is great for building endurance, muscle strength, and cardiovascular fitness. Just make sure that when you are heading out to swim a few laps, you wear protective clothing and bring along some sunscreen.
Cycling
There is no easier way to exercise and enjoy the summer weather than to grab your bike and hit the road. Cycling is another low-impact workout, but it's one that is too often mistaken for fun! It can help build your endurance, strength, and physical fitness while the wind whips at your face and the sun shines down on your back. But don't forget your safety while enjoying the ride too! Be sure to wear reflective clothing, protect your head and eyes, and know the rules of the road before you head out for long distances.
Summertime Exercises
It's almost time when our days will become brighter and longer, so get yourself ready to enjoy them by moving your body with some spine-friendly exercises. With the suggestions above, you can easily protect your spine and maintain optimal health while also having a ton of fun in the process! So, what do you say? Are you ready for a summertime workout?
