Yoga and You and Changing Perceptions

By Virginia Laird

What if there was a workout that could help you stay focused, was low stress, and relaxing? Is it possible to find a low-stress workout?

Yoga may be exactly what you are looking for. Yoga can be for everyone. Having been a certified group exercise instructor and loving faster paced classes, I was a skeptic of yoga for the longest time. Recently, I began attending yoga class and much to my surprise, I love it. There are a plethora of benefits for those who participate in the exercise. The effects of yoga can be long lasting.

Yoga is not the fast paced, aerobic exercise many of us typically imagine. It consists a series of stretches and poses in congruence with deep breathing techniques. All this helps to bring peace to your body and mind while actively participating in the class.

After Your First Couple Classes

Participating in as little as 20 minutes of class can have a powerful impact of your body. Changes you may notice include an increase in flexibility and lower stress levels. Changes that take place that go unnoticed by the naked eye include improved brain function. Muscle strength and tone are noticeable changes after just a couple of classes. You may also find that your ability to be patient when you might normally get frustrated is also increased.

After a Few Months of Class

After a few months of participating in class, your body will have even more changes. These changes can have a powerful effect on your overall health. They include lower blood pressure, increased lung capacity, lower stress and anxiety levels, relief from some chronic pain, and an improved sense of balance.

After Years of Yoga Participation

Furthermore, after years of participating in yoga, your bones will be stronger and your heart will be healthier. Your life will seem less stressful as you will have learned how to take everything in stride and divert stress. Yoga may have improved your ability to be more patient with others. It is amazing the benefits you can see by adding a little yoga to your life.

Whether you are looking for something different or trying to achieve the benefits proven by yoga, you don’t need to miss out on the opportunity to get started on your fitness plan.
