3 Reasons a Bag Can Harm Your Back
By Virginia Laird
Selecting the right bag seems like an easy task. However, there are a ton of things one should consider before loading any bag to carry. More reasons to consider bag options include:
- Weight
- Type of bag
- Frequency of use
Weight of Bags Can Pull on Your Spine
As a woman, I can vouch for the weight of a purse. For some reason, things I don’t always need end up in my purse. Although most of the items in my purse do not weigh a ton individually, together the weight is often too much. Bags can be the same way. It is important to establish a good routine when using bags and purses. Daily emptying of the purse or bag can help to lighten the overall load. The heavy weight pulling at the shoulders can put unnecessary stress on your spine causing shift to occur. Anytime this happens it can obstruct the functions of the body.
Type of Bag Plays a Role in Protecting Your Spine
You don’t have to be a fashionista to take time selecting the type of bag that you should carry. Don’t get me wrong, I am all for a bag that matches the ensemble, but more importantly, you need one that doesn’t tug at the spine. One-shoulder bags and purses put strain on the spine; the pressure from such bags is unbalanced and easily throws the spine off kilter. A backpack that distributes the weight more evenly would be a better selection.
How Often Do You Really Need a Bag?
Another thought is the frequency of the use. If you need a bag every day to carry loads of supplies, it is important to consider all the options. A daily need of toting heavy supplies may require a rolling bag instead of a backpack. When possible, if your load is light, try not to carry a bag. Carrying your things without a bag can help keep your spine free of strain. Occasional bag use is the ideal way to use a bag. Everyday use is harder on the body and most especially the back.
