Foods You Should Consider Buying Organic
By Genevieve Cunningham
The push for buying organic food has been around for a while now. There was a point in time when no one really noticed or cared about the manner in which food was grown, but that's not the case in our modern world. We like the thought of organic and hormone-free and antibiotic-free. But is it really necessary? If you've ever wondered whether you can skip the organic aisle (and the extra bucks), take a look at these foods that you should consider buying organic and why.
Strawberries
Strawberries are a delicious fruit that have lots of Vitamin C and are packed with antioxidants. They're a favorite for many because of their sweet flavor and juice. They're a great addition to any menu. If you want to eat strawberries, it might be worth it to shop organic. Because strawberries are grown on top of the ground, pesticides are sprayed directly on the fruit, making them dirty and at risk of contamination. If you choose not to buy organic, make sure you wash these kinds of plants thoroughly before consumption.
Apples
Another fruit that grows above the ground, apples may be cleaner if bought organically. Adding apples to your diet adds water, Vitamin C, and lots of fiber. They're easy to pack at lunch or for snacks, are loved by people of all ages, and can even help clean your teeth. If not bought organically, wash thoroughly or peel the skin.
Kale
Kale -- and lettuce and other leafy greens -- are often cleaner if you buy the organic option. And leafy greens are definitely something you want in your menu. Leafy greens give your body a blast of Vitamin C, keep you feeling full, and encourage efficient digestion. Great choice, whether organic or not.
Are There Others?
These aren't the only foods worth buying organic. If it's a food that grows above the ground -- grapes, blueberries, tomatoes, and many more -- it might be worth it to get the organic version in order to avoid contamination and pesticides. Is it necessary? Not really, but creating a healthier, cleaner diet is always a good idea for your body and for your future health. Use your best judgement, do your research, and create the healthiest diet possible for your entire family.
