3 Ways to Get More Walking in Your Everyday Life
By Genevieve Cunningham
In the last few years, many people have made counting their steps a real priority. Pedometers are hot items in the fitness world because they allow people to monitor their steps without any thought. But why do our steps even matter? In short, counting steps is a really simple way of getting in a little more walking. But unless you find ways to move, your steps and your health will likely stay the same. If you want to increase your steps and improve your health, take a look at these easy ways to get in a little more walking every day.
Why is Walking Important?
Walking is an easy way to get more movement into your life, and our bodies were definitely meant to move. The more that we move, the more likely we are to have an acceptable body fat percentage, higher cardio, stronger muscles, and better health as a whole. Walking is easy on the joints, good for the lungs, easily adaptable, and good for almost every body type.
How to Get More Everyday
-
Walk to work or lunch - If you’re able, why not get in more steps by walking to work or to lunch? If work is within reason, put your work shoes in a bag, throw on some tennis shoes, and get a quick workout both before and after work. If work is not within reason, make a trip to a local restaurant or diner at lunch. This is a really easy way to get in some walking without really putting out much extra effort.
-
Get a treadmill desk - This might be one of the more expensive options, but it’s a great way to walk every day. Treadmill desks are like standing desks, except they quite literally have a treadmill on the bottom. You can read your email, work on projects, and do all kinds of work while walking in place.
-
Get a dog - The great thing about a dog -- besides the endless love and affection -- is that they will absolutely not allow you to be sedentary. Dogs require energy, and a lot of it! If you’re having trouble getting enough steps throughout the day, get a dog that you have to take on walks. You’ll gain the boost in movement as well as a ton of love and loyalty from a four legged friend.
Walking is an excellent low-impact option to get in some movement and exercise. With a little planning, you can even get in the exercise that you need with very little in the way of extra effort. Grab some shoes, make a plan, and improve your health in a big way with just a few extra steps every day.
