Preventive Methods for Stopping Strokes

By Brandi Goodman

Certain risk factors make it even more likely that you'll experience a stroke at some point in your life. Preventive methods for stopping strokes from happening are vital for anyone who already has these risk factors. With American Stroke Month in May, now is as good a time as any to begin your preparations in improving your health and reducing your chances for one happening to you.

Exercise More Often

Exercise helps the body in numerous ways. If you want to lose weight, improve your flexibility, enhance your health, and even prevent the possibility of a stroke, then more exercise in your routine is the way to go. Thirty minutes of exercise each day can help you to lower your blood pressure and reduce stress, two additional options for reducing chances of stroke.

Monitor Blood Sugar Levels

High blood sugar can cause damage to blood vessels. Damage to these vessels can lead to clots forming. This can then lead to a stroke occurring. Monitoring your blood sugar levels, especially if you have diabetes, is one preventive measure recommended for stopping stroke. You can use a monitoring system if needed or simply watch your sugar intake and be honest about the way your body is feeling after a meal.

Quit Smoking

Smoking ups your chances of having a stroke significantly. Plaque builds up in your arteries and causes your blood vessels to restrict. Blood can no longer flow freely throughout your body. If you want to prevent a stroke, you should quit smoking immediately. Your body will need time to adjust and for the effects and damage to be reversed.

Lose Weight

A large number on the scale can prove dangerous. Weight can be damaging to the body in a number of ways, from causing joint pain to raising blood pressure. It can also be a cause of diabetes. Losing weight and maintaining a healthy BMI reduces your chances of these problems, which reduces your chances of a stroke as well.

Your health is an important topic that should always be on your mind. When you have an increased risk for things like stroke, heart disease, or other serious illness, you should do your best to find ways to prevent it from happening. Get routine checkups and medical care in combination with following a healthy lifestyle at home to improve your chances of remaining well.
