Rid Your Home of Allergens
By Sara Butler
It may not seem like an area of interest chiropractors have, but rest assured they want to see you at your healthiest. One of the things that can prevent you from being healthy is for your body to constantly be stressed by allergens in your home. While your regular chiropractic visits can help to strengthen your immune system and help you feel better, being under a constant deluge of allergens can have a big impact on your health. Here are some ways your chiropractor suggests you try to rid your home of allergens.
Even sealed windows can let allergens into your home. Pollen granules are so small they can easily infiltrate if your windows aren’t sealed correctly. Make sure your windows are properly caulked and sealed, and then make sure the HVAC system in your home is properly circulating air so that allergens can’t get in from the outside that way, either.
Pets bring a lot of joy into your home, but they can also be a source of allergens in the unlikeliest of places – their dander, their saliva, and their urine. It’s not the fur itself that is causing your allergy troubles but proteins that Fido's skin secretes through glands. This doesn’t mean you need to get rid of your dear Muffin, but instead means you should take extra precautions by bathing your pet weekly and washing your arms, hands, and face after you’ve petted or played with them. It’ll go a long way in keeping the pet allergens in your home to a minimum.
Your bed is a place of rest, but it’s also a source of serious allergens in your home thanks to dust mites. You need to make sure you’re washing your bedding in hot water every week in order to reduce their numbers. Also make sure to clean under furniture and clean your floors, windows, blinds, bedsprings, and any other places that dust mites can call home.
If you have a wood-burning fireplace in your home, then you need to make sure the wood you bring in to burn is free from mold. Mold is a serious allergen for many people and can easily cling to bark on trees. Examine the wood you bring into your home thoroughly for mold before you burn it. If you see mold, then don’t bring it into your home!
If you struggle with allergies, your chiropractor can help! But you have to fight the battle on your own turf too by making sure allergens are not taking over your home!
