Is Laughter Usually Part of Your Day?

By Sandy Schroeder

When you find yourself smiling at your family, or giggling over a shared joke, you are on the right track. Researchers and doctors say laughter can be a key element in good health.

When worries, strains, pressures and predicaments insist on making the world grim, we should all look around to see what can be done.

Here are five things that may be interfering with your happiness.

Slipping into envy – Most of us know someone who always seems to have the right answer. They make everything look easier. If we looked closer we would probably find they have challenges, too. Thinking about what makes them so enviable may tell us what we need to change to move ahead.

Giving in to fear – Feeling insecure can definitely slow down your day. If you have to question everything you do, you may find yourself frustrated and bogged down. Look to friends or co-workers for some good feedback. They can tell you what you are doing well, and what you need to change.

Making comparisons – Compare yourself with your own efforts. As you get better you can see your progress. It’s good to learn by example, but then you have to move forward on your own, learning as you go. Keep looking for feedback to measure your progress.

Negative input – Always look for the positives around you and stick with them. Upbeat family, friends and co-workers can help to make your day, inspiring you to try harder and do more. Getting enough sleep, exercise, and healthy food can make a big difference too. Monitor your surroundings to make sure everything is working for you.

Negative people – Most of us know at least one toxic person who never fails to have all of the bad news. I usually head in the opposite direction when I see them coming. Stress can be contagious and toxic people seem to be loaded with it. Keep looking for positive people who understand how good attitudes work.

Finally, the best defense may be a good offense. Start your own laugh bank, and make deposits every day. Look for funny new movies, amusing quotes, hilarious shows, and clever commentary. Whenever your day threatens to head in the wrong direction, call a funny friend, or take time out to read a funny quote. Funny situations are all around us. We just have to learn to see them.
