Spine-Saving Tips From the Chiropractor

By Brandi Goodman

Your spine can be thrown out of alignment easily. It's also a common place to feel pain. Whether you're lacking in exercise or allowing yourself to slouch, you're likely to experience a stiff and sore spine that limits your mobility. Some spine-saving tips from the chiropractor can help.

See a Chiropractor Regularly

One of the best things you can do for your spine is see a chiropractor. Routine adjustments can help keep your spine inline and ensure no joint restrictions are in place that are causing you trouble. Subluxations can limit your mobility and make it more difficult for your back to remain strong and flexible. Having routine adjustments can make sure they're corrected promptly and you're able to live your life as well as possible.

Strengthen Your Spine Through Exercise

Don't get on the floor and do sit-ups over and over again. Exercises like these are actually harsh on your spine and should be avoided. Instead, you want to try spine-strengthening options that keep your back feeling strong and well. Stretch out carefully to start and then take a short walk around the block or go for a swim. Yoga is also ideal.

Eat a Spine-Healthy Diet

Certain foods are beneficial for your spine because of the antioxidants and vitamins they provide. Plant-based proteins, such as spinach and beans are particularly helpful. You should also eat broccoli, kale, salmon, low-fat dairy, avocados, and berries.

Follow Lifting Protocols

No matter if you're at work or at home, you need to follow lifting protocols. It doesn't matter if you're lifting a small package or a large box. You need to lower yourself into a squatting position, grab the item close to your body, and lift back up with your legs. Never bend your back and attempt to stand back up with the item far away from you. You'll end up hurting yourself tremendously.

Listen to Your Body

If you're in the midst of an activity and you realize your back is hurting, don't push through. You need to listen to what your body is telling you. Pain isn't the norm. If you're feeling stiff and sore, it's time to take a break and allow yourself time to stretch and relax so you can loosen the joints in the aching area. You're more likely to experience an injury or severe pain if you push through without listening to what your body truly needs at the moment.

Stop in at The Joint Chiropractic when you're ready. After your first adjustment, be sure to follow their recommended schedule for return trips. With these tips in mind as well, you should experience a healthier spine that remains free from discomfort more often.
