4 Reason a Chiropractor Can Improve Your Sleep
By Virginia Laird
Are you having trouble getting enough restful sleep? There can be many explanations for this problem. Moreover, the solution maybe very simple. Believe it or not, your chiropractor can help you identify your sleep issues and begin to assist you in finding your ability to achieve your ideal sleep. Not only will your chiropractor adjust your spine, allowing your body to restore function appropriately and naturally, but your chiropractor will also discuss several other topics with you. These include:
- Sleep positions
- Mattress and pillow choice
- Stretching and exercise
Adjust your sleep positions
More people than you can imagine are stomach sleepers. Stomach sleeping is actually one of the worst positions for your body. This sleep position does nothing to help your body naturally adjust itself. Sleeping on your stomach causes your back, your joints and your muscles to be more restless. It also causes strain on all parts of your body. A better choice would be to sleep on your back or side.
Mattress and Pillow are Key
Whether you enjoy a firmer mattress or not, those are actually the best ones for back support. Softer mattresses sag and allow the spine to shift. Those types of mattresses also cause strain on your body. As one area sinks lower than another it allows the body to put strain on the areas around the sunken mattress. I know a mattress is not where we like to spend extra dollars, but a good mattress is worth every penny.
A good pillow is also a must. We would all rather reach for the inexpensive choice, maybe a nice fluffy pillow that may allow us to move as freely as possible. Again, this is a place where a firmer choice is better. A firm pillow allows your head and neck to remain in proper placement while sleeping. This keeps the strain at bay.
Evening Routine Encourages Improved Sleep
While seeking help for your sleep issues, your chiropractor will encourage you to establish an evening routine. It should include simple stretches and relaxation methods that allow the muscles to release any tension. This will also help with a better sleep.
Maintaining Function Improves Sleep
As always, having your body functioning properly will help improve your ability to rest well. Routinely visiting your chiropractor for adjustments will allow your body to restore proper function. You may notice an increase in energy as well as an improvement in your sleep among other benefits.
