Are You Stretching to Keep Up With Daily Tasks?
By Sandy Schroeder
Usually, body stretches are automatic. Reaching way back in a shelf, or bending down to get something, never seems like a big deal. But changes in habits, and time, can interfere. As we sit more, and move less, muscles can tighten, causing pain and reducing movement.
At first it may just be annoying, but when stretching becomes difficult or painful, at home or at work, it’s time to get some answers. The body’s joints need to be flexible, and pain-free, to keep us active and avoid injury.
How Your Chiropractor Can Help
To evaluate the problem, see your local chiropractor at The Joint Chiropractic in your area. The Joint’s staff of licensed chiropractors can help you find the answers you need.
Your chiropractor will want to discuss your daily routine, pain that you are having, and health history. An adjustment may be used to assess your spinal health and joint flexibility. You may feel pain relief in your joints, and an overall sense of wellness with more energy and alertness.
Homework for Flexibility
As you evaluate your results, you and your chiropractor can put together a plan of action to increase your flexibility. Weekly 15-minute adjustments, stretching exercises, and more daily activity, may be the way to regain your normal routines.
You may want to try a class in yoga or tai chi, or start stretching exercises two to three times a week. Your chiropractor can suggest stretching exercises for the neck, back, shoulders, hips, legs and ankles. At the same time, reducing sitting time at work, and adding activities such as walking or biking to your daily schedule will help.
The Mayo Clinic advises using walking as a warm-up, and starting gradually with a stretching routine that focuses on symmetry. Stretch the muscles and joints that you normally use, and never push to the point of pain. Do not bounce as you stretch, and hold each stretch for 30 seconds. As you develop a routine, tailor your stretching to your activities, and work on the areas that are still tight. The goal is to make your daily routines effective and pain-free.
