4 Common Symptoms of Cervical Disc Disease
By Debra Rodzinak
Neck pain can be painful, aggravating, and debilitating. When the pain in the neck radiates down the arm, life can be miserable. Cervical degenerative disc disease is when the discs in the upper region of the spine begin to wear down and form little tears. Genetics can predispose some people to this painful disease. Injury and age can also play a factor. There are four common symptoms related to cervical disc disease.
Neck Pain
A still neck is often the most common symptom. This pain is not debilitating, but considered low-grade. When the pain flares up, it can become severe. This pain may last a few hours or even days.
Nerve Pain
When the nerves of the neck are affected, the pain moves from low-grade to sharp electric shocks. This pain can send these shock-like pains racing down the shoulder into the fingers, arm, or hands. This type of pain is typically felt on one side of the body only.
Neurological Symptoms
Again, affecting the hands, fingers, arms, and shoulders, neurological symptoms can cause a pins-and-needles tingling, weakness, or even numbness in these areas. Although, not as painful as nerve pain, this can be much more debilitating due to the interference with daily activities like typing, driving, or holding objects.
Pain with Movement
When the pain subsides with rest and increases with movement, degenerative disc disease is often present. This disease can cause inflammation and instability to the area.
If the pain is solely from the degenerative disc, the pain will usually subside and go away in a few weeks or months. However, if the joints in the neck start to degenerate or the spinal nerves are pinched, the pain will become chronic and need treatment. Chiropractic treatment can help relieve the chronic pain of cervical degenerative disc disease.
