Why Chiropractors Warn of a Posture Pandemic
By Brandi Goodman
Good posture is necessary for maintaining spinal alignment and keeping the back and core strong. Yet, so few people exhibit good posture in their daily lives. Due to the increase in the use of technology and the ever-growing trend of staying home and ordering online, chiropractors are warning of a poor posture pandemic that can harm our well-being.
A Rise in Cell Phone Use
Cell phones have quickly taken over our world. Sure, there's a lot that makes them beneficial. You can make phone calls, send texts, watch videos, check the news, and so much more. However, the consistent bend in your neck as you look down at the small screen does much more harm than you may realize. The weight of your head can tug your neck and shoulders down, causing discomfort and even subluxations. It can alter your posture, always making you likely to slump your shoulders and look downward rather than standing fully upright. Limiting daily phone use needs to be done so you can avoid this dilemma.
Online Ordering
The option to order food, clothes, and other goods from online also plays a role in this posture pandemic. You may have stopped going out altogether, simply placing an order and allowing a delivery driver to come to you. This may seem like a convenient option, but it quickly becomes an inconvenience to your life when you realize your weight gain, poor posture, and low self-esteem because of it. It's best to venture out yourself and get some physical activity in when you do.
An Actual Pandemic
The year of 2020 saw another pandemic. Covid-19 quickly ravished our world as we know it. When you're mandated to stay inside and do nothing but watch TV and order online from your phone, it's easy to let your posture weaken. Many more people than ever before have started to struggle with discomfort and poor spinal health. No matter what's going on in the world around you, it's important to find ways to keep your health in check. This may mean finding a workout video to get your exercise time in or laying down with a good book rather than looking down at a phone more often.
Poor posture is a pandemic that won't soon end. With all of this heavy technology use infiltrating our lives, more and more people are spending hours looking down instead of up.
