Why You Should Be Like Popeye and Eat More Spinach
By Genevieve Cunningham
Do you remember those old Popeye cartoons? You know the ones. Popeye has to save the day in one way or another, and in order to do so, he downs a whole can of spinach. As soon as he does: Bam! His muscles pop out and he’s suddenly strong enough to save everyone. While eating spinach isn’t quite this dramatic in real life, it absolutely does have some amazing benefits. To boost your diet and make your health a top priority, check out these great reasons to eat a little more spinach.
Spinach is Packed With Protein
You probably already knew that meats contained a lot of protein, but spinach also contains its fair share of this healthy nutrient. Protein helps to burn fat and build muscle (like Popeye!), so it’s always a good idea to add it to every meal. Spinach can be used in a salad for lunch or dinner, and for breakfast, it can be chopped up and thrown into an omelette or some scrambled eggs. It can also be blended with veggies and fruits and natural milk into a delicious smoothie for any time of day.
It’s Low Calorie and Filling
There aren’t a whole lot of foods that are both low calorie and also filling to the stomach. Most low calorie foods will have you hungry in just a few hours, but not spinach. It contains just enough fiber to keep you feeling full for hours. At the same time, this fiber will help move your digestion and keep you regular. Low calorie, a full stomach, and a clean digestive tract … a super food with super benefits.
Spinach is Nutrient Dense
If you want a food with a powerful and nutritious punch, spinach is the best choice. You’ll get multiple vitamins including Vitamins C, K, E, and A. It also contains a healthy dose of iron, plenty of protein (as mentioned above), and magnesium. Eating spinach is much like taking a multivitamin, except in a more natural and tastier fashion. Even a couple of helpings a week is enough to boost your health long-term.
Spinach is an excellent addition to any menu. While it can take some getting used to for some, it’s worth it for the healthy benefits. You don’t have to open a can of spinach every day, but add some fresh leaves to your regular menu to boost your health and make your diet top notch.
