Road Trip Realities: Chiropractic Tips for Pain

By Brandi Goodman

A road trip is a common activity people partake in during the spring or summer. Many groups of friends and families head out in their vehicles to spend hours enjoying one another's company as they make it to their destination. The reality of a road trip for many is pain. People are often spending far too much time traveling and remain inside a cramped vehicle without taking a break. Some chiropractic tips can help you experience a pain-free road trip you'll enjoy a lot more.

Maintain Your Posture

People may tend to slouch in their seats, especially if the drive is long. This can quickly lead to pain settling in the lower back. Maintaining proper posture will help to prevent this pain from developing. As the driver, you need to keep your body close to the pedals so the extra space does not cause tension in your legs and then your back. Everyone should keep a lumbar support pillow behind their backs so they remain upright and are not slouching down.

Stretch Often

Every so often, stop the car and get out to stretch. A few simple stretches in your seat can keep the pain from setting in too quickly, but it won't be enough to prevent cramps. The legs particularly need to be stretched out and you should do some moving so you have the ability to keep going in your travels. Look for a gas station or a rest stop along the way where you can get out, stretch your legs, and perhaps even take a short walk around the building to get the blood flowing and the joints moving. It should provide adequate relief.

Use a Heating Pad

A heating pad can soothe any muscles that are feeling sore during your trip. Some cars have heated seats. Use these when you can to give yourself relief. If you don't have this option, bring along a travel heating blanket or pad you can plug right into your car to charge. It may come in handy after a few hours spent on the road.

You may want to visit The Joint Chiropractic before heading out on your trip to get any joint restrictions removed. It will allow your body to function at optimal levels so there is less chance for pain. Visit again once you arrive home for an adjustment that will get your body back to normal.
