Chiropractic Care & its Value of Patient Satisfaction

As chiropractic care becomes increasingly accepted as a legitimate form of medical treatment, insurance companies are showing a new interest in research being put into determining levels of patient satisfaction. In earlier years of chiropractic care’s development there was a debate over the effectiveness of chiropractic techniques, in comparison to the cost-effectiveness of using it as a method for treating various conditions of the musculoskeletal system. Yet to date, there is an overwhelming amount of patient survey’s and clinical research supporting chiropractic care as a satisfying form of therapy for its patients in general, even scoring higher in satisfaction rates in comparison to more traditional forms of medical care.

A study in 2006 found that overall, patient satisfaction with chiropractic care to be “very high.” For some this came as a surprise considering that at that time most of the financial costs of chiropractic care fell directly on the patients themselves, as insurance coverage covering chiropractic treatment was much more scarce at that time. For people who paid out of pocket for a service to rank it with high satisfaction ratings indicates the real effectiveness of the techniques used, especially in that they are applied to some of the most chronically stubborn, painful, and problematic ailments known to affect humans, namely, back pain and neck pain.

By comparing studies in patient satisfaction with chiropractic care, one of the commonly repeating aspects of this satisfaction was the easy availability of chiropractic care which can treat a patient in a much shorter amount of time than the average hospital or other health clinic. Chiropractic care is direct and efficient without relying on costly medications that require trips to thepharmacy or intrusive surgeries that can require time spent as an inpatient.

Another interesting trend that emerges from research into patient satisfaction with chiropractic care is that the treatment becomes more satisfying the less the chiropractor depends entirely on their own manual manipulations of the musculoskeletal system. Patients appreciated being instructed in stretching and exercises as an additional method of treatment in combination with chiropractic adjustment. In fact, this combination repeatedly yielded long lasting results that earned the highest levels of patient satisfaction. This is thought to be because patients are given a flexibility to choose preferred exercises and stretches, and when patients feel they have agency over their own recovery results are more successful and healing more rapid.
