Need Help Finding Pain Relief?
By Virginia Laird
There are times it seems back and neck pain may never be gone. Determining exactly why this pain shows its ugly face is just as important as getting rid of it. A trip to the chiropractor can help. Chiropractors are determined to not only help get rid of the pain, but actually find the cause and correct it. Many times pain in the neck or back is self-inflicted and can be reduced by making a few small changes. Chiropractors recommend these three changes to help reduce and manage pain.
Uncross Your Legs
While crossing the legs may seem natural, research shows otherwise. Crossing the legs can put unnecessary stress and strain on the spine. It also causes the body to shift, causing the distribution of weight to be unbalanced. Chiropractors recommend sitting with the feet flat on the floor. If you are a shorty (like me) this may require you to place a book under your feet. Although this may not seem cool, you will be glad you decided to do so.
Begin Using the Plank
Planking is one of the best exercises to strengthen the core. Having a strong core improves posture and can help to reduce back pain. Planks are an exercise chiropractors recommend and can be done in the comfort of your own home. These are simple exercises that require no extras (weights, bands, etc.). I typically do my planks while enjoying an episode of "I Love Lucy." This helps to pass the time. Make sure to use correct plank form, and keep in mind it will take a little time to see results.
Reduce Your Device Use
Although checking your device every hour may seem the norm, it wasn’t too long ago that it wasn’t. You most likely did not have Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc., which caused you to need the device constantly. Chiropractors suggest that too much device usage causes back pain. Although generally unnoticed, as people look at their device, they are leaning toward it. This causes people to hold their head out of place. Chiropractors recommend holding the head over the shoulders. Such placement allows the shoulders to help carry the weight of the head. Holding the head without the support of the shoulders for hours on end can cause pain that can become unbearable.
