Your Health and the Condition of Your Home

By Rachel Shouse

There are a multitude of different things that can affect your health. The air you breathe, how much exercise you get, the way you eat, etc, are all capable of affecting your health in a negative way. One thing you may not think of is your home. It's true that you can become what you eat. Living in a mess is no different. Letting your home go has an affect on your mental and physical health.

How Your Home Affects Your Mental Health

You may not think of your home when you think about the causes of mental illness. Although it may not be the No. 1 cause for mental illness, it surely can cause a dramatic increase in symptoms. Both depression and anxiety can be greatly affected by the environment you live in.

Depression and anxiety are not easy to conquer. Both can cause a serious lack of motivation which can cause a quick deterioration of your home. Although it may be a real domino effect, you have to try your best. Being surrounded by stress in the middle of a battle with mental illness truly won't help. The best thing you can do is make small goals. Make them as small as you need to in order to succeed. It doesn't matter if it's as simple as loading the dishwasher or washing a small load of dishes. Productivity tends to have a snowball effect.

Your Home and the Effect on Your Physical Health

You might think that your home may have more of an effect on your mental health than your physical health. Something simple that is often overlooked is germs. Although you are used to your own germs and don't need to disinfect everything all the time, it's still important to clean what really needs it.

It can feel overwhelming when your home gets out of control. This happens to everyone and there are simple ways of fixing it. The number one thing is developing a routine. Starting at night by cleaning your kitchen before bed will help a lot. Families spend a lot of time in their kitchen. If you have children you know the surprise messes that can be found in the oddest places. Your kitchen is no exception.

Keeping a clean home is something you should do for yourself. The goal is not perfection. It's to create a home that you feel comfortable in and are proud of.
