Tips for the New Runner

By Donna Stark

Do you want to take advantage of the warm weather and head outdoors for your fitness routine? Have you considered adding running to your list of workouts? With only a great pair of shoes and some extra time in your schedule, you can strengthen your bones, improve your cardiovascular health, and burn those excess calories. But don't head out the door just yet!

Tips for the New Runner

Your local chiropractors at The Joint Chiropractic want you to safely reach all the goals you set for yourself, so they came up with a list of tips that will help you find success with your runs. Take a look.

  • Invest in a good pair of shoes - This is probably the most important tip to follow because if you don't, you could end up with a lot of pain or an injury. Head to your local running store and ask to be fitted by a professional.
  • Stretch before you hit the road - It's important to stretch your muscles before you head out for a run. Running with muscles that aren't properly warmed up can result in a strain which can keep you off your feet for days, or even weeks.
  • Start slowly - It's always best to start slowly so your body can adjust to this new routine of yours. Then, as time goes on, and when your body feels up to it, you can increase your pace and distance.
  • Give your body some rest - Even if your first run goes smoothly, you should still wait a day before heading out for the next one. Your body needs to rest so your cardiovascular system, muscles, and bones can recover.
  • Avoid eating before you run - Try to avoid eating anything substantial at least an hour or two before you head out and only have a small amount of water to drink. If you get a side ache while running, slow down and walk until the pain goes away.
  • Strength training - Strength training that focuses on your body's leg and core muscles will benefit you greatly during your runs. Ask a personal trainer or look online for specific exercises to follow.

Reaching Your Goals

Establishing a new running habit may seem overwhelming at first, but with the tips above and your local chiropractors from The Joint Chiropractic cheering you on, you will be able to reach your goals in no time. Just remember, this isn't a race, so slow down, master this new routine, and have fun in the process!
