How Can You Prevent a Stiff Back in the Morning?
By Sara Butler
Some mornings can be a little rough, especially when you wake up with a stiff neck or back (or both!). Sometimes, this morning stiffness can be a sign of a medical condition, but sometimes it’s just a normal part of aging. But you don’t have to live with a stiff back in the mornings, because there are things your chiropractor recommends you do to help prevent the aches, pains, and stiffness that some mornings can bring.
How Do You Sleep?
The first thing you want to look at when you wake up with a stiff back is the position you slept in the night before. The best sleeping position is on your back, and the second best is on your side. If you’re a stomach sleeper, then that may be your problem since stomach sleeping puts a strain on your lower back and neck.
If you do sleep on your back or side and notice stiffness when you wake, then it may be because you’re not offering enough support to your spine. Use pillows to support your neck, shoulders, and lower back as you sleep. If you have your head elevated above the rest of your body, then this can contribute to morning stiffness.
What you do over the course of a regular day can have an impact on your back and neck, too. If you practice poor posture throughout the day, then that can definitely lead to morning stiffness and pain. You may also want to consider the actions you perform every day at work and at home that can impact your back, as well as your diet. The truth of the matter is that how good you feel in the morning is a direct reflection of how you’ve treated your body the day before, and how healthy your habits are in general.
One of the best things you can do to help reduce neck and back morning stiffness is to see your chiropractor regularly. The adjustments they perform remove joint dysfunction and restriction, contributing to your better overall health and improving the health of your spine.
