What Chiropractors Recommend for Sitting Jobs

Does your job require sitting in a chair for long hours with few breaks and a short lunch? Many adults are forced to work in office settings that require sitting and limit movement. However, this type of job can cause back problems, strains and stress. The joints and muscles can be affected in a negative way after long periods of sitting. Chiropractors have the following suggestions for jobs that require sitting.

Take Breaks

Even if you cannot walk around the entire office, try to take frequent breaks. Get up and stretch, or walk around the desk. Move the legs and arms to reduce stiffness. Find an excuse to leave the desk so the muscles and joints have a chance to exercise and move.  

Get a Good Chair

An ergonomic office chair can help reduce aches and pain. Chiropractors recommend finding a chair with good back support and arm rests. It is better to use an adjustable chair that can change to fit the desk. The right chair will be comfortable and make it easier to sit during the day.

If your office allows it, then switch to a stability ball for part of the day. These balls can help strengthen the back and core. They provide a workout for the muscles while sitting. The key is to maintain a straight posture while using a stability ball.

If you want to do away with sitting, you can always request a standing desk.

Pay Attention to Posture

Pay attention to your posture while sitting at work. Make sure the back is straight, so you are not leaning forward or straining the neck. Keep the keyboard and computer at a comfortable distance that does not create back problems.

Exercise

Chiropractors recommend incorporating exercise into daily routines to strengthen the core, spine and improve health. If your job offers gym memberships or other fitness help, consider using it. Exercise can help the muscles and joints survive a sitting job. It is important to find a workout routine that you enjoy and can do on a regular basis. Consider getting a trainer or joining a fitness class at the gym.
