Chiropractic Tips to Keep Chores Pain-Free

By Brandi Swieter

Chores can be difficult to accomplish, especially when a person starts to suffer from back pain because of them. Many household cleaning activities leave a person feeling sore and achy from all the bending, twisting, and reaching they have to do to get the job done. With a few chiropractic tips in mind, anyone handling their chores can keep it pain-free.

Lift With the Legs

Too many people attempt to bend down and pick up laundry baskets, boxes, bags, and other things they need to move from one room to another. This can wreak havoc on the back, causing a lot more than just soreness. The proper procedure is to lift with the legs by bending at the knees and standing up straight, keeping the back in place while doing so. Lifting this way puts less tension on the body.

Take Breaks Between Chores

Many residents try to get all their chores down in one interval. They want to rush through all the tasks so they can sit down and relax. While it may seem like a good idea, doing chores in this manner is actually harmful to the body. You don’t want to overdo it and cause muscle fatigue. Instead, it’s best to take short breaks between each chore so there’s time to rest and recuperate before moving onto the next job.

Use an Extension Cord While Vacuuming

The job of vacuuming is already harsh on the back with all the moving and bending to reach every spot. It makes it even worse when a person has to constantly stop what they’re doing to bend down and plug the cord into a new outlet before being able to reach further into a room. Using an extension cord is a smart idea because it means less stooping to switch outlets and more time spent vacuuming the floors.

Place the Laundry Basket on the Table

Far too many bend down into their laundry basket to grab out the clothes before they fold them. This can leave a back aching in pain. The better option is to place the laundry basket up on the table, or at least on a stool or chair, so there is no need to bend down into it to grab clothing. The back will feel much better afterward if doing laundry this way.
