What Chiropractors Recommend for Standing Jobs

By Brandi Swieter

Most people talk about the negative aspects that come from jobs that involve sitting all day. They say to get up and stretch regularly and avoid sitting too long. What about the jobs that require people to stand for an extended time? Store greeters, teachers, and retail associates fit into this category Chiropractors have advice for these positions as well; they wreak havoc on the back and body if people aren’t careful.

Exhibit Good Posture

Poor posture in the workplace is a common culprit for back pain. All workers should exhibit good posture and remain upright if they want to avoid aches in their back and legs. Stand as tall as possible and avoid slouching forward or leaning on counters, desks, or other surfaces.

Stretch the Legs While Standing

Unless you’re a guard at Buckingham Palace, you won’t likely get in trouble for moving at least a little while on the job. Rather than standing completely still and not moving a muscle, it’s best to at least stretch the legs while standing to improve blood circulation. Failure to stretch will result in a loss in proper posture and inevitably allow pain to set in. Simply raising up on the toes to stretch the feet and calves is a great help.

Wear Comfortable Shoes

The shoes a person wears plays a major role in how they’ll feel after an activity. People who have to stand at work need to have sturdy shoes that offer support and cushion. Flat shoes or high heels will not be adequate for most positions. Pain in the legs can quickly head up the back with uncomfortable shoes that provide no support. Those who must wear a certain type of shoe can at least find gel insoles to put inside to give them an extra layer of comfort.

Visit the Chiropractor Often

Routine chiropractic care can help the body remain in optimal condition. People are more likely to handle even the most strenuous tasks as long as their bodies are up for it. With chiropractic alignments and a body that can stretch and move without problem, standing won’t be a problem.

Jobs that involve standing for hours at a time can cause pain quickly if people aren’t careful. Anyone suffering after a day of work can visit The Joint Chiropractic to have any joint restrictions removed. A doctor of chiropractic will know just what to do to get the body in proper alignment so it feels able to continue on working the next day.
