Why Chiropractors Recommend Swimming

By Brandi Goodman

Exercise can improve mood, enhance mobility, develop strength, and make the body feel better overall. Swimming is a chiropractor-approved exercise in many cases because of the low impact on the joints. It does not cause unnecessary stress on the body and can instead help to alleviate pain that many people feel when working out on land. Swimming is a terrific exercise that chiropractors recommend for many reasons.

Natural Resistance Strengthens Without Strain

Using weights and resistance bands can put far too much strain on certain areas of the body. This strain can lead to injury if people are not careful. Water offers a natural form of resistance that has a lighter effect. It still strengthens the body but without putting undue strain on it. This is ideal for those who already suffer from weak muscles or joint pain.

Low Joint Impact

Because there isn't much strain, swimming is a workout with low joint impact. Most of your weight is supported by the water. This means your weight is not placed on your joints and causing discomfort. You get to exercise without worrying about how your joints will feel during or afterward. The activity may even reduce joint pain you currently have.

Improving Flexibility

Making the body more flexible prevents injuries and allows it to move easier. You'll be better able to get around and handle more activities without holding back. Of course, one swimming session won't do the trick. You'll have to continue the activity if you want to truly develop your flexibility, strengthen your muscles, ease joint discomfort, and make yourself more mobile than before.

Weight Loss

Weight has a major impact on the joints. The more you weigh, the more pressure your joints will feel. Exercise helps people lose excess weight and then maintain it once they've reached a healthy point. Swim more often if you want to experience weight loss that can reduce the pressure off your joints and leaving your body feeling lighter and healthier.

Pair swimming and other low impact exercise with routine chiropractic care and you should start to experience less pain and improved well-being. Visit The Joint Chiropractic before you start swimming to ensure any restrictions are not going to inhibit your success. Stop in for a visit after swimming if you've encountered any tightness or discomfort that you want checked out as well.
