Using Chiropractic Care for Better Mental Health

By Brandi Goodman

Because the month of May is National Mental Health Month, it's important to take a look at just how better mental health can be achieved. Finding ways to reduce stress and promote overall mental clarity is a huge help, yet many are unsure of how to go about achieving it. Chiropractic care is one option for improving mental health.

Reducing Stress

Stress eats away at the mind quickly. It can also cause chronic pain, particularly in the neck and shoulders. You may feel much more anxious when you're stressed, as well as angry, sad, and otherwise not yourself. Chiropractic care can alleviate some of the tension built up in your body and help to relax you. This will reduce your stress levels and allow you to feel some relief.

Enhancing the Mind-Body Connection

Chiropractic care works to align the body's musculoskeletal structure. Restrictions can block the mind from connecting with the body as it is supposed to. You may feel aches in certain areas, have an immune system that does not function correctly, or otherwise experience illness or discomfort. With the help of chiropractic and the removal of these restrictions, the mind-body connection can be restored so each can function more efficiently and with less pain and problems.

Promoting Sleep

Sleep can be hard to achieve when you suffer from depression, anxiety, or other mental health struggles. You may find yourself lying awake at night unable to get any rest, which only leads to further complications for your mental health and overall well-being. Chiropractic lowers your blood pressure, reduces pain, and takes away some of your stress. This provides an opportunity for you to finally achieve some rest as your relaxed mind and body are more likely to drift off than if still feeling tense and irritated.

Helpful Hints for Home

Your doctor of chiropractic will not only adjust you in the office, but will also provide some helpful hints for things you can do to boost your health at home. If you're struggling with anxiety or depression, some breathing techniques or stretches may be beneficial to do regularly. You will also receive guidance on some of the foods you should add to your diet that will promote a healthier mindset. When you exercise and eat well your mind is more likely to operate at its full capacity and feel less stressed or foggy.

Mental Health Awareness Month is a great time to start making regular trips to the chiropractor. Visit The Joint Chiropractic to have an adjustment and see how having joint restrictions removed can encourage overall health and wellness, both for your body and mind. It's not a cure for mental illness, but it is an option to feel healthier and better overall.
