5 Chiropractic Tips for Teachers

By Brandi Goodman

With approximately 90,000 teachers in all of Arizona and millions within the U.S., it's important that those who teach know how valued they are. As some of the most important people in charge of shaping children's lives, you need to take care of your own well-being, including in the classroom. Some chiropractic tips can help you make it through the workday a bit easier so the tension of teaching doesn't get to you as much.

Choose Supportive Footwear

Bulky boots, high heels, and flat shoes are not appropriate for teachers to wear. While they may seem to complement your outfit, they won't do much good for keeping your body pain-free. Supportive footwear should be chosen each day so you don't end up with terrible foot and leg pain by the end of it.

Watch Your Posture

Whether you're standing at the front of the room lecturing or you're at your desk grading papers, it's important to watch your posture. The way you sit and stand can have an impact on the pain you experience before the day is done. Sit and stand straight and avoid slouching or hunching so your posture does not become a painful problem.

Use Lumbar Support When Sitting

You may spend hours sitting at your desk on select days. Sitting for long hours can cause pain just as much as standing can. Use a lumbar support cushion during these times to keep your back supported and free from discomfort.

Stay Hydrated

It's important to drink plenty of water throughout the day and stay hydrated. This will keep your joints hydrated so they're more flexible and better able to handle the long standing and sitting hours teachers do. Keep a bottle of water with you at all times. It will help to keep your mouth from getting dry as well from all the talking you'll be doing, so it's truly necessary.

Get Routine Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic care can be a teacher's best friend. Get routine care so your body is in optimal condition and better able to handle your daily job duties. An adjustment can remove joint restrictions or subluxations so they do not cause interference with the nervous system and the way it operates or its connection to the brain. This can help to limit tension and even illness caused by stress and imbalances.
