Safe Boating Tips From the Chiropractor

By Brandi Goodman

Boating is a common summer activity for many. Despite this fact, lots of people still end their boating trip with back pain, shoulder tension, and severe burns. It's important to follow safe boating tips from the chiropractor so you can enjoy your time and end it without feeling aches.

Stretch Before, During, and After Boating

Just like any other activity, you need to make sure you're stretching. Your joints need time to adjust and improve flexibility so they can handle the boat ride with less chance of problems. Stretch your body before you even head out on the boat. You should also be sure to stretch throughout the trip, especially if you're spending most of it sitting in one place. Once you get back to shore, stretch again to help transition your body back to land.

Wear a Back Brace

A back brace can be helpful if you know you tend to experience discomfort from long bouts of sitting. The waves crashing against the boat will only make it rock, and cause aches in your body. A back brace can help hold you in position better so you aren't getting bumped around as easily when the boat moves.

Make Sure the Seat Has a Back

Some boats, canoes, and other watercraft only have a bench seat. It's just a small spot for you to sit with no back to offer support. There are makeshift seats you can add that will provide the back you need. A stadium seat that you could take to a ball game will work fine in your boat. If the seat you add still doesn't support your back quite enough, then including a lumbar support may be advised as well.

Apply Sunscreen Often

It may not seem like something a chiropractor would typically advise, but having a sunburn can interfere with your body in a lot of ways. A severe burn can cause you discomfort and make it difficult to sleep at night. You may find yourself sitting in uncomfortable ways to try to avoid something touching the location on your body that's been blazed. This is why it's advised to apply sunscreen often while you're boating so you don't experience unnecessary pain that can lead to other problems.

Enjoy your boating trip rather than ending it feeling sore and tired by following tips from a chiropractor. You always want to keep your back and shoulders safe no matter the activity. If you still finish your boating excursion feeling sore, stop in at The Joint Chiropractic for an adjustment. You may need a joint restriction corrected or tension released if you hope to get any rest after your adventure.
