So, You Think You Are Safe From Disasters?

By Tom Herrin

Some people probably feel like Tucson is about as far from the problems such as hurricanes as anyone can get.  It doesn’t border any kind of large body of water.  It may not seem like a familiar target for earthquakes.  The fact is that many disasters have shown the ability to come almost out of nowhere.  The unpredictability of natural events that result in emergencies may be the very reason why people should have a disaster plan in place.  Wildfires, tornadoes, and floods, as well as the other things mentioned, have proven that they have no borders or standing rules.

There Are Some Good Planning Resources

People don’t have to reinvent the wheel when it comes to developing a disaster plan.  Many agencies have spent considerable time and effort trying to develop a good working plan for these situations.  The Federal Emergency Management Agency, or FEMA, is dedicated to these kinds of efforts.  Many state and local agencies work with FEMA to bring important information to local areas.  Any of these groups may be able to provide some suggestions and guidelines that can help in developing a plan.  When people work within their own families, they can personalize a plan that will work best for them.

What Needs To Be Included In A Plan

A good to-do list is always helpful, particularly if people practice the steps regularly.  Making a kit that may be kept close at hand to be picked up and carried out in an evacuation is essential.  As has been seen in places such as Beaumont, Texas when water purification plants were damaged, bottled water is a must in a quantity that can last for a few days.  Food that can be eaten without cooking is another important thing.  First aid supplies and copies of important documents should be kept on hand, as well.

Be Prepared For Communication Problems

When things such as power are lost, normal communication may be disrupted.  Cell phones may not work at all or cannot be charged.  It is important for everyone to have a list of all family contacts with numbers and/or email addresses.  Other significant people or agencies would be helpful to have, too.  With a well-designed disaster plan, you can breathe easy in the comfort that decisions will not have to be made in a panic.

Also important is being in good health to withstand the turmoil your life will be in. Don't take your health for granted, either. It may save your life.
