# A Road Map to Better Health

 3 min read

Optimal health is an individual journey. If you were a fly on the wall where I practice at The Joint Chiropractic in Glendale, Calif., you’d hear many patients complain of the same issues, yet my advice or response would vary to some degree. Although the presentation of health issues may appear very similar, the actual core problem may be different. Each circumstance is unique because there are so many factors at play when it comes to health. However, there are a handful of tips I give to my patients for an overall well-rounded approach to a full and fruitful journey to optimal health. If you were that fly on the wall, these are the tips you’d hear me give.

### 5 Steps To Succeeding With Health

Your health is your responsibility and optimal health is a process. Life gets busy and it’s definitely challenging at times. During the chaos and the challenges, it’s easy to put yourself last, but the truth of the matter is this: For you to perform at your best -- whether it be in your role with family, friends, work or anything else -- your highest level of health is required. The only person who can assure your optimal health is you. In the same way that going to the gym once doesn’t result in weight loss, occasionally practicing good health routines doesn’t make for a healthy individual. Optimal health is a process. It’s the sum total of many healthy practices -- spiritually, mentally, physically and with regard to community and interaction with others.

Seek out providers who understand and work on the premise that the body is a whole system that works together and supports its ability to heal itself. When looking for practitioners or doctors to help you along the way, find ones who satisfy two requirements. First, someone who wants to support the body in the process of health, not simply treat symptoms that appear. Second, the practitioner holds true to the philosophy that the body as a whole works together -- systems can’t be separated out as if they don’t affect each other, because they do.

Health is not all about genes and what is passed down from parent to child. Our level of health is highly dependent upon day-to-day choices we make; the latest science shows that we have the ability to turn certain genes off and on based on various lifestyle choices. It’s easy for us to look at our family health history and simply hang our health picture alongside those who’ve gone before us and resign ourselves to the fate of heredity. However, in many instances we have the ability to change that history -- it just takes active participation.

Know that the body wants to be in a balanced state. Your body craves a state called homeostasis, a regularly stable position -- an equilibrium. Our daily life choices and health practices either support that balanced state or pull us from it. Lack of water and sleep, not getting chiropractic adjustments, consuming too much alcohol, being inactive and eating processed foods are factors that pull us away from the homeostasis. Regular chiropractic adjustments, proper nutrition and hydration, regular exercise and healthy spiritual, mental and emotional practices all support the body’s natural balanced state.

Your body has the ability to heal itself. There is an innate intelligence within your body from which you evolved from the moment of conception. That intelligence is within you until the day you die. So no matter what, your body has the potential to be healthier than what it currently is. That intelligence is able to work more efficiently and profoundly when you are clear of interference (spinal misalignments, or subluxations). Keeping that truth close to your mind and heart allows you the hope to start up and engage in new health practices no matter what your current health situation looks like. Given the opportunity, your body can heal.

### Questions of the Heart

Here are a few questions to help assess where you’re at in your journey.

- What practices do you engage in right now that support health in your life -- spiritually, mentally, physically, and with regard to your community?
- Do your current providers seek to understand the root causes behind your health issues and support your body’s ability to be healthy and not simply treat symptoms?
- Do you blame health issues on genes or do you look for ways that you can optimize your current state of health?
- Do you listen to your body and allow it the chance to come back into balance?
- Do you believe in your body’s ability to heal?

Answer these honestly and you’ll be able to see opportunities to strengthen your health journey. After all, that’s what it’s all about.
