How to Change Your Focus From Weight to Health

By Genevieve Cunningham

It's so easy to get caught up in the very generic goal of weight loss. Most of us could stand to lose a few pounds. We know that losing weight would make us look better and feel better. We know that a healthy weight is important for the overall wellness of our body. But it's hard to lose weight. And sometimes it seems that the more we focus on it, the harder it becomes. But if we don't focus on it, then how are we supposed to ever lose those extra pounds? If you're interested in better health, take a look at these tips for changing your focus from weight loss to better health to help you find ultimate success.

Find New Measuring Sticks

There are so many different ways to measure your health. Though most of us tend to choose weight first, it's not even the best indicator of our overall health. Try to find new measuring sticks in your fitness journey. Measure the inches around your waist and arms and legs. Go to the doctor and get a check-up that includes cholesterol levels, blood sugar levels, and other serious factors in your health. If you change your focus from simple appearance to things that really matter, then you may be more motivated to make changes that last.

Speak With Your Doctor

Doctors often know best. If you have a regular doctor, go for a checkup. They can tell you information about your body and overall health that is incredibly valuable. They may be able to tell you the dangers of not losing weight. They may be able to tell you areas of your health that are far more important than your weight. And most importantly, they may be able to give you some tips that get you moving in the right direction. When you're talking about something as serious as your health and well-being, you need to get to a professional and get quality care starting now.

Combine Them Both

Using your weight as a guide is not the worst thing in the world. If you like the idea of losing pounds, go ahead and combine a weight loss goal with other fitness goals as well. This takes some of the focus off of the weight, but doesn't entirely free you of that responsibility. Many people find this combination to be a great success. Find two or three measuring sticks that make you feel productive and happy, and use those to get in the best health of your life.

It's OK to want to lose weight. It's OK to want to fit into a smaller pants size. And it might be a really good idea for you to personally lose a few pounds. But don't let your weight be your entire focus. Make sure that your focus is on your overall health and wellness instead of on a number on a scale. Use these tips to shift your focus slightly, and you may find more success than ever before.
