Why Exercise is Even More Important As You Age
By Genevieve Cunningham
As kids, exercise comes naturally. We run and play and move our bodies in a million different directions. As we get older, exercise turns into something else: a quest for the perfect body. We work out so that we can feel good in a swimsuit and relax on a beach. But once we get beyond those young adult years when exercise is all about appearance, we sometimes let it go a little bit. We skip the gym more often than not. We stop worrying about the perfect beach body. While letting go of the incessant need to be perfect is a good thing, letting go of exercise is not. We need exercise -- maybe even more when we get older. To see the importance of exercise as you age, take a look at this quick guide.
To Keep Flexibility
Flexibility is something that naturally diminishes as we age. While we can easily touch our toes as kids, we may not be able to reach our knees as adults. Because of this natural decline, it's so important to keep moving! With more movement comes more flexibility, and more flexibility means a better quality of life.
To Keep Strength
Strength is another area that naturally declines with age -- unless we work for it. Strength is needed for exercise, lifting objects, opening jars, and performing almost any activity. If you want to be strong and capable, exercise should be a part of your routine for the rest of your life.
To Maintain Balance
Balance is necessary. When we don't have good balance, we run the risk of suffering falls that could bring serious injury to our bodies. To maintain balance, make sure you're doing exercises that cater to this issue. Yoga is a good option. Light weight lifting is a good option. But really, anything that challenges the muscles is a good option! Don't let your balance become a concern when all it really takes is a good routine and a plan of action.
To Promote Longevity
People who lead active lives are more likely to lead longer lives. They go hand in hand. If you want to live a long life, you need to stay moving. Whether it's walking, running, aerobics swimming, or something else -- just stay moving! Though it can't guarantee a long life, it certainly raises the chances and improves the quality of the life you get as well.
Exercise is important at every stage of life. No matter your age, pick up a routine and stick with it! An active life is a better life, so make good choices and stay moving in your life starting today.
