Natural Ways to Fight Off Depression

By Genevieve Cunnigham

Depression and general mental health is a hot topic in the world today. Finally, the stigma surrounding mental conditions are beginning to dissipate, and in its place we are left with helpful tips and advice for managing the problem. Sometimes this means seeing a counselor or therapist, and other times it means medication to help us cope. While these can be excellent solutions for many, it’s not always the only answer. In fact, sometimes mild forms of depression may be helped with some natural methods. If you’re feeling a little blue, check out these natural ways to manage depression and get back to feeling yourself.

Exercise

Your body is incredibly smart. When it is stressed mentally or emotionally, just try to tax it physically. Your body will feel the extra stress, and will then let go of the other kinds of stress. It simply can’t deal with multiple kinds of stress at one time. The more you exercise, the more you’ll feel that release on a regular basis. Exercise is also beneficial because it releases a certain chemical in the brain, often nicknamed the happy chemical, because of its ability to leave you feeling upbeat.

Get Involved

If you’re feeling down, you may not want to do anything but sit around and binge your favorite shows on Netflix. While this certainly has its appeal, it’s actually really bad for you if you’re already feeling down. Instead, get up, get out, and get involved. Being involved with others helps us to feel a connection and boosts our mood. Find a fun class, join a local group, or ask some friends for a little time together. It might make the difference in feeling blue and feeling better.

Let It Go

And by “it,” I mean everything. No, don’t stop getting dressed and going to work, but let go of any excess baggage. Upset about something your spouse said? Let it go. Mad about the way something turned out at work? Let it go. Let go of anything that you don’t have control over, and instead enjoy an activity that you do have control over, like a hobby or personal interest.

While some types of depression absolutely warrant a trip to a professional office, milder feelings of the blue may be corrected with some simple lifestyle changes. Use these tips to beat the blues and get back to feeling like your best self in no time.
