Watching Fish Can Improve Your Health
By Tom Herrin
How many times have you looked out over a lake or the ocean to what is almost a form of hypnosis? There is something particularly soothing about watching the water. Time can pass there without the usual hurried pace we see too often. Everyone has experienced it. If you say you haven’t, I would challenge your thinking -- or suggest that you've never been around a body of water. Even if you are not a fisherman or a boater, watching water is soothing. It has some special qualities that are difficult to duplicate. The sound of running water, as in a stream, can help put you to sleep. I sometimes listen to soundtracks with that in it. You can capture that in your home by setting up an aquarium and it can make you healthier.
The movement of fish in an aquarium has some of those same properties as I already mentioned. Let alone the many colors of tropical fish, there is a special feeling obtained when watching fish gently glide around in their simple habitat. It can relax you and lower your blood pressure. Studies have shown that watching fish can have the greatest effect on you. Even watching an empty aquarium with just water can have some good effects.
Even Common Diseases And Disorders Can Be Improved
This therapeutic practice of watching fish is not limited to just blood pressure. Children with various types of what we would call hyperactivity can become taken with a fish aquarium. This is matched by Alzheimer’s patients and the areas of improvement they show after watching fish. There is obviously something to this that is a little indescribable. When I was a high school principal, I had a large aquarium in my office. Whenever a student was having a rough day and I needed to talk to them, I would let them spend a few minutes just sitting by the aquarium. It was pretty soothing.
What If You Don’t Have A Place For An Aquarium?
Even watching a video of fish can be helpful. I love watching them on a television screen. It is pretty relaxing. All you have to do is go buy a good video. There are actually a few around. You can probably find one you like on the internet as well. Don’t sell it short. You can enjoy it if only a few minutes a day. Give it a try because it really can improve your health.
