You May Improve Health While Golfing Without a Club

By Tom Herrin

When people think about golf, the first thing that comes to mind may be picking out the right club  for the task. It is certainly a well known game to many people and a good way to get some exercise. It is not the only game in town however.  In recent years, Frisbee or disc golf has taken a place in many communities. It may not have the history and prestige of its more traditional cousin, but it can be a lot of fun with a lot less cost.  With no special equipment needed, a few dollars for a disc can help someone be on their way.

It Can Be Good Practice for Problem-Solving

When people are challenged to use their minds as they play a game, it can help keep the brain working.  This may help to stave off some forms of dementia. It can also be a way that people use strategy and analyze factors such as the wind, angles, and objects that may be in the path of the disc.  Practicing may be a way of improving skill, but may also provide the participant with greater confidence in their abilities. More confidence is generally good for self-esteem.

It Can Build Social Ties

Most of the time, when people play disc golf, they play with someone.  It can be a great game for kids’ groups. Whether it is a church group or just friends, people can have a good time with a clean, low-stress game.  Families can easily play since it can be played by people of almost any age and ability level. People can modify the game for whatever additional challenges they want to create.

It Can Provide Exercise

Contrary to the belief of some, you don’t have to work up a huge sweat in order to benefit from exercise.  You can play disc golf by walking the entire course or step it up into a jog or run for more of a challenge.  Whatever you choose, you can get a reasonable amount of exercise by playing an hour or so from time to time. It can help you to connect with the outdoors while maneuvering throughout the course.  Give it a try, and surprise yourself with the fun you can have. You will likely get more exercise without even realizing it.
